LANZAROTE SPORT FISHING. INTERVIEW WITH OSCAR PINEDO

Lanzarote, as well as being an island well known for its landscape and climate, it is also a
recognized destination if we talk about fishing.
The richness and variety of its Atlantic waters and the mild climate allows fishing all year round,
and make this island a favorite destination for fans of this exciting sport. Enjoy a truly nautical
vacation, doing what you love.
We can’t talk about fishing in the Canaries and not talk to one of our key persons, and someone
who has a good knowledge of the waters in Lanzarote; Oscar Fernández de Pinedo, who has
granted us this interview to learn more about fishing in Lanzarote and what we’ll find if we plan to
travel to these latitudes.
Oscar, how were your beginnings in the discipline of fishing and how did you end up in
Lanzarote?
Actually I fish from my childhood, most of the pictures of my childhood are with a cane in hand,
both at sea and in the river or reservoirs, sunny or snowing, I was always stalking trout or what was
in reach.
I was attracted to Lanzarote sport fishing by its sea and good weather, as I was born in Vitoria.
You usually fish in Lanzarote. What would you highlight from this area to encourage others
who do not already know to come fishing?
Lanzarote, because of the shape it has, and the trade winds, has a natural protection, which
makes commercial fishing not as intense as in other islands, so that the fish can regenerate with
less fishing pressure. There are really pristine areas, and depending on the season, we can
capture all kinds of species.
Do you need to have experience to come fishing with you? What should we take if we were
to come fishing with you?
We do fishing trips of all kinds and at all levels, so that you can have a first experience of fishing on
a boat for little money. On the boat we have all the material, as well as insurance and professional
crew.
What types of services does the company Rubicon fishing offer to fisherman? What
memories do you think the fishermen take after sharing with you any day of fishing?
In sport fishing, we offer the possibility of fishing, jigging, trolling and coast line, and the jewel in the
crown, fishing in the Marine Reserve.
Memories, sunset in Isla Alegranza with friends after a long day, some limpets, fresh fish, wine of
the island, and the sun reflecting in Volcanoes is not easy to forget.
One day, a good sailor told me that the important thing was the Indian, not the arrow. In
sport fishing do you think the material, boat, tackle, electronics, is more important than the
fisherman?
Skipper, equipment and fisherman, if one of the three things start to not function, then things get
complicated, especially when fishing for large pieces. How would you define the profile of the fisherman that usually visit you?
They are fishermen with many expectations on Lanzarote, which often have not received good
information at source and are confusing seasons. It will be difficult to catch a marlin in February for
example.
Oscar we know about your sporting achievements. Explain briefly how was your experience
in fishing tournaments and if you’re going to continue to promote championships in Marina
Rubicon – Lanzarote …
Actually, years ago I stopped doing all the championship circuits. We have won some
championships in forms of marlin and wahoo, and we have two IGFA world records aboard the
AURA MARINA, and a pending third party approval.
Lanzarote has a mild climate throughout the year, although we know that there are better
times for each species and technique. Which ones would you highlight?
For fishing, marlin, wahoo, etc, September, October and November, the rest of the year is best for
jigging and bottom, within its variants
In these times when awareness of ecology and respect for the environment is growing
every day, what would you say to those who still believe that recreational fishing damages
the survival of marine species?
Sport fishing is regulated so that it can take 5 kg, per license, and large catches are photographed
and released again. Sport fishermen collaborate with patrol and environmental control of poaching.
There is a great ignorance on this subject.
What do you feel about fishing without death?
I practice it, except with ground fish that come up already damaged and also have important
gastronomic value, and we use them for our customers and us. As a rule we release billfish and
sharks that accidentally come into our decoys. I also respect skippers who decide to catch marlin,
and that is perfectly legal, having the permissions administration determined to do so.
You recently renewed your fleet with a powerful boat the “Aura Marina”, specially prepared
for fishing. Could you tell us all the facilities incorporated?
Yes, it is a Hatteras 45 ‘, an American classical Fisher of 15.5 meters long and 4.42 meters wide,
and a deep-V hull. It has three cabins, lounge, kitchen, air conditioning and two bathrooms, so this
season many of our guests sleep in the “hot spot”.
We can not let this opportunity pass without making the typical question to any fisherman:
What has been your biggest catch and what has been your best experience fishing?
A blue marlin of about 380 Kg, in “stand up” (no fighting chair), and rod, reel and line of 80 pounds,
which was then released.
I have fished in many countries of the world and my best experiences with marlin, tuna and wahoo
have been Alegranza, (North of Lanzarote), with my children and my friends.
So we can only thank you for this interview and take the opportunity to encourage all our
customers to come and share with this great fisherman all the secrets of this island, one of the
world’s best places to fish.
To finish off, what better than watch the latest videos of Oscar in Lanzarote.
Thank you very much … and good fishing!
